BLUE PRINTS FOR EVERGREENS

In August of 2002, Kenny Vitellaro took me over to the Island View Manor House to meet with Jimmy Cutro. The Manor House has been in the Cutro Family since 1946. It was built by Frederick J. Quinby about 1911 most likely as model to operate out of during his ill fated TANGIER MANOR CORP days. The last Quinby to live there was a woman named Rose, who showed up in the 1920 census. About 1921 after the Tangier Smiths repossesed most of the land they had sold to Quinby, Edward Rogers Tollfree bought a bunch of acereage from Clarence G. T. Smith along with the Manor House. It was then known as The Tolfree Estate from 1920's - 1945. Tolfree sold it after Mrs. Tolfree died in 1944 and it was briefly in the hands of another real estate speculator named Walter T. Shirley from whom the Cutro's purchased it. While Jimmy was giving us a tour of the place, his daughter dug these blueprints out of the closet. They date from 1929 and were prepared for Mrs. Tolfree by Hicks Nursery... how much , if any of them were implemented on Tolfree's property I do not know. The Hurricane of 1938 did a lot of revising of Long Island landscape and architectural history.
