UPDATED : NEWS YEAR'S EVE DEC 31,2006

Calling All William Floyd Students, Teachers, Custodians, PTAers Mastic Beach, Mastic, Shirley residents etc past and present .....

When we leave school, either with diploma in hand or not, we all face lives full of whatever comes our way both good and not so good. 12 years ago I thought I would never get to see my son graduate high school , not because he was doing poorly either. Instead it was me who was given bad news by the MD's....Last month I got to watch him graduate college....and next month hope to see him off to Europe. But I never take anything for granted...I live by the old sage advice I first learned from newsman the late John Chancellor "If You Want To Make God Laugh ...Tell Him Your Plans For Tomorrow!"

I want to call your attention to a Mastic Beach pioneer family that could use your thoughts and whatever other help you might be able to render. George Barnes class of '64 was one of the earliest contributers to my website with photos, info etc including a treasured 1940's Mastic Beach Directory.

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME OR AT SCHULTE'S OR WHEREVER YOU WANT IT TO START

This photo from the 1940's shows George Barnes Sr. holding the poster. He is meeting with Jim Watrous, Captain Andy, Paul Schulte Jr and Walter Ury to organise a Christmas Party for the underprivlaged kids in Mastic Beach.

Well the Barnes family are undergoing some extremely trying times right now. George and his wife both have had some serious medical setbacks but those are made much harder by what has befell their son Chris and his family..... A devestating brain injury to their son Chris who lives in the UK. Speaking as someone who's son is now living in Europe, I cannot fathom how I would deal with any similar situation if it befell Erik, who has just spent his first Christmas just being away from his family

A Letter From George Barnes Regarding His Son Chris December 10, 2006

Dear Friends & Family

We’d like to take this opportunity to extend our deepest appreciation to all of our dear friends for their continuous positive thoughts and prayers for Chris’ recovery over the past year and a half.  We are truly blessed.

To provide for Chris’ continued care including alternative treatments such as hyperbaric oxygenation, acupuncture, holistic treatments, reiki and cranio sacral, and massage we have developed a fund-raiser for your consideration.   Attached in Microsoft word is a brief flyer describing the planned benefit.

Chris has been transferred four times since his tragic injury 20 months ago.  Each facility specializes in neurological treatment for severely brain damaged individuals.   He receives a full range of therapy, physio, occupational, speech, botox, and alternative procedures on a routine basis.   Although he cannot speak or move any of his limbs we have faith that he can hear and understand us although he cannot respond.   We pray for continued developments in science that may be utilized in treating Chris over the long term.   Every option in medicine available is being explored.

Donna and I will be spending the Holidays with Chris at the Jacob Centre.  We’d like to wish everyone the seasons best and for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Once again, thank you so much for caring and God bless.

George

THE FRIENDS & FAMILY OF CHRIS BARNES

On April 21, 2005, Chris suffered cardiac arrest, which resulted in an anoxic brain injury due to loss of oxygen while jogging in the park adjacent to his home in Kensington-Chelsea, London, UK . No cause was ever determined for his injury. He cannot communicate or move any of his limbs and remains 100% dependent for his care but continues to show improvement.

Chris' family in New York has organized a fund raiser for his continued alternative care and treatments at the Jacob Centre in Sawbridgeworth, England. Our objective is to ensure that Chris continues to receive as much therapy as possible to remain as healthy as practical with the goal of Chris traveling to China to receive stem cell treatment and therapy.

Our fundraiser will be for: An all expense paid Round Trip for Two to London for 6 nights and 7 days OR $2,000 in cash. Tickets are $10.00 each and may be purchased by contacting any family member online and /or by sending a check payable to: Friends and Family of Chris Barnes, P.O. Box 444, Mastic Beach, N.Y., 11951-0444. We will forward all tickets to you.

We send our deepest gratitude to everyone for your acts of kindness, your love, support and most of all your ongoing prayers for Chris and his family.
