Who Remembers The

WHITE STALLION REST ?

IN SHIRLEY, L. I.

A few months ago, my old pal Kenny V asked me if I ever came across any pics of the White Stallion. I told him I hadn't and of the pics I do have that were taken at its location, ( on the corner of William Floyd Parkway and Montauk Hwy) and near proximity, the White Stallion always seemed to be just outside the photo frame. It's slight setback from the highway then, may of been the reason for its demise, but it never seemed busy and I don't recall ever going in there to eat with my family the entire time we lived in the area from 1950 - 1964. I believe the art deco brick building it was in, was the first restaurant in Shirley and this menu judging by it's prices, probably dates to the time Shirley was not even an official town, but rather a place named for it's developer Walter T. Shirley. The official Post Office designation did not come until 1952. The current Shirley Post Office sits about where the White Stallion was located. It's first competition came from Schaefer's Snack Bar located diagonally across the intersection and then in 1957, from Howard Johnson's which opened directly across the street from it. All three are long gone now.
