BROOKHAVEN TOWN
JUNIOR POLICE

Talk about timely!
These photos arrived today from Bob LaCentra ( Wm Floyd '64) soon after I posted the Brookhaven Town Police album. The Junior Police was a youth group organised by Sgt. Dave Burkhardt and a few of his fellow officers from the 4th Precint. The kids got hats, badges and T Shirts ,,, But No Guns !! to the disapointment of some of the recruits and they participated in things like the Memorial Day Parade in Mastic Beach.

Memorial Day 1959

I believe that's Bob who would of been in Junior High on the right side keeping the junior junior cops inline. They are passing St. Andrews Church, Up at the top of the hill on the left side of Neighborhood Road, you can see the Red Barn

They have probably stopped for a wreath laying at the WW2 Boys and Girls Memorial

BACK ON THE MARCH

I think that is Officer Larry Schulz (arrow) in the rear flank

AMERICAN LEGION COLOR GUARD

These guys got the guns and they used them too at the Cemetary "Come On Folks We Are GoingTo See The General"

MORE COPS

Within one day of my posting this, these pics below arrived from Kenny Vitellaro who also was "on the force" in '59

At Headquarters on Baybright Drive in Shirley

NO THEY ARE NOT UNDERCOVER, THIS WAS THE STAGING AREA FOR THE 1959 PARADE AT TRIANGLE SHELL ON THE WEST END OF TOWN

Kenny tells me the hats were just loaners for the parade ... That is Donald Bull (in front) wearing what looks like a Sheriff's Badge from the Old West .That's Gary O'Donnell behind him looking like a casual Irish NYPD Detective, Kenny who was always having too much fun, and in the foreground a pensive looking John Gaeta who looks like he is observing a crime scene

Like the Brookhaven Town Police the Jr Police was folded into the new SCPD for a short time
