THE MORICHES GARAGE

TWIN LAKES REST and GARAGE Moriches, L. I. Phone 489

They were the TWIN LAKES as they were referred to in the 1920's but sometime after WW2 or perhaps in the 50's they started calling them Twin Ponds and I think it has stuck. This garage and rest stop was on the south side of the very skinny then Montauk Highway just east of Barnes Road across from the East or Little Lake that ran up behind Edmund Hallock's property, General Store and Moriches Post Office. The view is taken from about where Fanning Landing Road joins Montauk Hwy looking south east. I believe the first propieter was Willie Schluter (Knapp's future estate superintendant) around 1924 or 25. It probably was Max Schluder's ( possible relative of Willie but different spelling) station at the time this photo was taken. Besides Texaco they are featuring PAN - AM Gas at 17 & 20 cents a gallon. The Refreshment sign seems to feature FRANKFURTERS not Hot Dogs. Notice the gazebo to the left of the house perhaps a place for the weary motorist to sit and enjoy Willie or Honey Schluter's home cooking ? Thanks to Estelle Parr Schulz for the QUICK ID of it . Both the house and garage are still be there today, The house is a real estate building the garage building is heavily modified a great deal and I'm not sure what it is used for. See the aerial photo below. Gone with the wind are most of the trees. The ad is from the Center Moriches Record Sept 6, 1926.
