WINTER AT THE PENNEYS

circa early 1900's

What you are looking at still exists today, but the surroundings are quite different to say the least! The view is looking eastward on Montauk Highway in Moriches. The first house on the left was the home of Clarence Gilmour and Edith Emmaline Penney. You can see the steeple of the Moriches Bible Church and the parsonage on the other side. The home which is now part of "Barntique" Village was also the boyhood home of Lloyd Gilmour , Robert Ross, Lawrence Bartlett and the surviving son Arthur Baker Penney born June 23, 1923. I recently obtained a fantastic oral history Arthur gave in 2002 that has connected many, many dots for me in regards to the Penney, Dana, Lawrence and Knapp families. Regular readers of this website should know by now there was a large relationship both marriage wise and contractually between the Penneys and the Knapps and no other family bridged a closer gap between the estate owners and estate workers than did Arthur's family. In 1928 at the age of 5 Arthur entered the first grade in the school just across the road from this house. I entered the first grade there in the fall of 1953.....I plan on adding in a page devoted to Arthur's wonderful stories and insights soon. Stay Tuned!
