"THE KNAPPS LIVED HERE" 1850's-1894 -

Photo : Ken Spooner Collection

This photo circa early 1900's of the home of Joseph Fairchild and Phoebe Palmer Knapp and their children Antoinette and Joseph P. (The First and Second Building on the left) It was here they hosted three US Presidents and countless other socially prominent people and many musical performers in the latter part of the 19th Century. The home next to it was a wedding gift to their daughter Antoinette in 1885 and was connected in the latter 1880's by a 4 Story conservatory that housed much of the Knapp art collection. Although there were no Knapps living here after 1894 it remained known as the Knapp Mansion for the rest of it's existence.
