Just like his father Harold, Curtis "Nicky" Chapman was one fine outboard racer. An old Moriches family, all the Chapmans seemed to be involved with boats, autos and planes. Nick's uncle Walter "Frog" had the Moriches Flying Field and his cousin Jacque set a record for solo flying at a very young age. I first heard about Nick and his race boats like The Rowdy from my pal Larry Schulz who's Mom went to school with him in the 1930's. When we got our first boat The Little Chief it was Nick who worked on the motor at his Bay Avenue, East Moriches shop. In 1961 he moved his shop to Captain Andy's in Mastic Beach, and I spent way too much time hanging around his shop. That was the year he won the outboard division of the marathon race around Long Island.
