Section 1 Mastic Beach 1940's

Along with Vandenburg / Chester's etc, & Mastic Beach Store / Dick's , James Ward's general store was last of the three markets servicing the original town of Mastic Beach over in Section One. It was also the first to close first becoming a plumbing supply house and then Meehan's Tavern around 1950. I am still hoping to find a pic of it as Meehan's Tavern and also George Kubala's original Sunoco Station the business on the left side of it. Both buildings are long gone. If you have them , please get in touch with me. Below is the Ward's Ad from the 1942-43 Mastic Beach Directory. McKinney's Real estate office building is still there. It's the caddy corner bungalow on the northwest corner of Whittier and Neighborhood. Mastic Beach Ice Service started by Leo Catteau in the days before The Beach had electricity, became Gus Pidgeon's Ice & Fuel Service in the 1950's. The Section 4 Ice Dock was located in BIG TOWN next to Distell's /Harrington's Custard Stand.
