Joseph P Knapp
The P Had To Stand For Proud Pappa
in February of 1892
Not only was son Joseph F on the way.
J P was giving birth himself (sort of ) to
one of the earliest conglomerates on
record.
Here is the first inkling the public
would get of it on January 5 of the new year
AND THEN JUST 3 DAYS AFTER DODI WAS
BORN, HIS POP HAD A JOB FOR HIM TO GO TO
WHEN IT CAME TIME FOR THAT.
90% OF ALL THE LITHOGRAPHY IN AMERICA
The Times called it a trust....others
would call it a monopoly. Notice That J. P's partner James B.
Duke kept his name out of it.. Other than probably calling the
shots on the name. Duke's tobacco conglomerate was called American
Tobacco.
AMERICAN LITHO MAY OF BEEN THE ONLY
JOB DODI EVER HAD AS HE RETIRED WITHIN 30 DAYS AFTER THIS EVENT
WAS ANNOUNCED IN NOV. OF 1929
I'm still not quite sure exactly what
it was that J. P sold to United States Printing.
as J.P. held onto ALCO GRAVURE until
he died. Or whose assets totaled 15 million? Both?
The article states no changes in officers
or operations. I guess Dodi kept his departure to himself.
But then again was he ever an officer
of the company? The only place I ever saw that was in his obit.
