Shirley...it was a town come lately to us "Mastic Ites" in the early fifties. My grandfather knew Walter T for years from the Stork Club in NY. City

Around 1957, my folks bought property just across the parkway from the school and as exciting as it was to think we would be building a new modern home, I was glad we chose to stay in Mastic Beach, because of my friends.... both all year rounders and summer kids.

 

A: In 1954, The boys from Mastic Beach Fire Department, stop at the new Shirley Post Office to pick up something from George Csabon. They were on their way home from a parade in Coney Island, My dad is on the far left . When Howard Johnson opened up in 1957 , my Mom was working the dining room and my sister Gerry the soda fountain. I hadn't been in a Howard Johnson's since we left South Ozone Park in 1950. You should of seen the Sundaes my sister made. Whipped Cream a foot high She was always getting in trouble with the management for being too generous with the food! The Shirley Beach pavillion. Great memories here. I always loved the colors, blue and orange. These photos and lots more like them are in the local history room of The Mastic Shirley Library...go see em' They are great.

 

B: Schaefer's Snack Bar sat at the end of William Floyd Parkway and Montauk Hwy. To continue north you turned left on Montauk took a right at the Post Office then continued on to Camp Upton Road, At the extreme southern tip of William Floyd is where you drove & parked to catch the Shirley Ferry to Smith Point Beach, The sign in the next pic tells of things to come.
