THIS JUST IN !
Last winter I received
an e mail from Bob Lee of Mastic Beach re the 1940
era aerial photos of Mastic Beach and the website in general.
Bob also sent me
a photo of his Locust Drive house which dates back to 1940 and
was originally owned by the Frank Henz family. It was one of the
first homes put up close to the Knapp Mansion after the estate
was sold. Bob's property is located where Monroe Drive, Dogwood
Road and Locust Dr all converge.
Well one good e
mail led to another. I mentioned to Bob that when I
visited what I call Ground Zero last October with the Albano s
, who live on Monroe Dr. just behind him , that they told
me when they first moved in, an elderly neighbor lady told them
about a mansion that once stood where their house was and that
she had some photos of it. Of course I asked The Albanos if they
knew her name, they could not recall it and said it was about
ten years ago. They also said they had not seen her in some time.....
So I asked Bob if he knew who it might be as the Albanos had said
she lived in the direction of where Bob's house is.
Bob's choice was
Mrs. Michael Gilewski, but unfortunately she was now the late
Mrs. Michael Gilewski. (Her later husband btw was the MBFD Chief
in 1959 when Knapp's mansion burned down, Mike died in 1961 on
his way to a fire) Bob said he might be able to contact the Gilewski's
daughter and ask if she knew anything about any photos of Knapp's
Well Marainne Gilewski
& Bob Lee came through
Special thanks to
Mrs. Anna Gilewski for preserving them for all these years
That's Doris Henz
working in her garden in the 1940's. Behind her is Monroe Drive
and just on the other side of that is the north and west faces
of Knapp's mansion . This would be during the time that George
and Lillian Sutter owned it 1941-50. It appears that grounds are
not being regularly attended to by the Sutters. Mrs.
Schulz said Dodi Knapp was always very attentive to his grounds.
Doris's Dad Frank Henz and his crop
