THE LORELEI

Your Roving Reporter, leaning on the deck of W. S. Dana's 1915 Gil Smith Cat Boat. She is in fantastic original condition and now housed in the Suffolk Marine Museum in West Sayville.

He aint heavy ... he's my brother

Well not exactly, but Big Bill Parr who ran the Parr Brothers Garages in both Mastic & Mastic Beach is shown here carrying Mr. Stiritz across a flooded Neighborhood Road in the 1940's. That's the Beach Tavern (Handy Pantry) on the right and The Parr Beach Garage partly visible behind the truck.. Bill was my best pal Larry Schulz's grandfather and the guy who took care of the car & boat motors for the Danas , Knapps, Tolfrees, Smiths, in short The Mechanic for the Mastic area Estate Owners.

THE WA-HITE

Continuing with the marine theme here is W. S. Dana's 1920 Elco Express cruiser circa 1949 . Boat was showing it's age and Bill Dana had been gone for a decade when this pic was snapped on the bank of Senix Creek in Center Moriches. Read more about it on the page "Dana's Toys" I found more pics this time out and a short article in a May 1920's issue of Yachting Magazine when Dana was still calling her "Alberta D,

"GAS JOCKETTE"

Miss Estelle Parr ( Mrs. Dave Schulz ) at the pumps of The Parr Garage in Mastic Beach circa 1942. That building across the 5 corners could be Becken's Farm Stand that stood on the property where Pat & Mike's would build their Texaco Station in 1946. The other pump and Coca Cola sign across Neighborhood Road is Paul Schulte's Market (Later known as Fishers)

AHH OOOOGAAH

Here comes Dave Schulz in "The Goose", Larry's Dad in his 1929 Model A Ford Sedan in 1954. It was a Bright Red colorful car for a colorful guy, and it had geese painted on the sides! HONK When our Model A Coupe pulled along side it was a mini car show.

PARTY ANIMALS

It was George Washington's Birthday on Feb 22, 1955. It was also Larry Schulz's (his 8th) and he got a new Columbia Bike for it. Helping him celebrate are Kathy Potts, me, my brother Butch and Lee Potts in front.

OUTSTANDING IN HIS FIELD!

Not really would you believe I'm standing about where the center hall of the Knapp Mansion once was. The Ballroom was behind me & the Dumbwaiter was just a few steps to my left (your right) . This is now the back yard of Edie Padilla & Will St. George. On the other side of the rear trees are the Albanos and they have a beautifully landscaped home. I'm happy to say that the Knapp property is in fine hands ....alls well that ends well.

These are just a few of the neat things I found this time out. Stay tuned as I begin to hone in on the many branches of Knapp Road in the weeks ahead

My thanks to Kenny Vitellaro, Pam Light, Mike Walters, Marty Van Lith, Anita Cohen, Estelle & Larry Schulz, Doug Percoco, Barbara Kolk, The AKC and Southampton Libraies, Steve Czarneiki, Bob Muse, Edie Padilla & Will St. George and Ed & Marilyn Albano
