"FROG & SCRATCHER"
and the very colorful
These two brothers Walter and Harold Chapman, of East Moriches NY and their sons Jacque & Curtis aka "Nicky" have appeared on this site before, Over the years I have continued to gather more articles and photos about them. I have had a lot of help too, from grandsons George Chapman of Sydney Australia and most recently Bob Oftedal, who lives in Georgia. I have mentioned on earlier pages linked below here, that I often hung out as a teen ager in the early 60's at Nick Chapman's outboard shop at Captain Andy's fishing station in Mastic Beach, There was usually always some excitement going on.....but I can only imagine how exciting it had to be hanging around with Frog and Scratcher, be it on land, sea or air.
Walter "Frog" Chapman 1891 - 1968 and his kid brother Harold "Scratcher" Chapman 1898 - 1968, were true living legends in the Moriches area. They were seven years apart in age and died with seven months of each other. What amazes me as I look through my newspaper clippings of their early exploits, that they ever lived long enough to even raise families!
This is the earliest photo of a very confident and relaxed teenager Walter "Frog" Chapman (front right) known to exist.
It's circa 1907. The mysterious logo on their shirts and basketball ? looks to be an E & M ... East Moriches School.
