JACK SPOONER &
THE BIG APPLE
AND NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE TOO !
The picture above, hangs at the entrance to our dining room here in Nashville, TN, The gentleman in both photos is my grandfather, John Jack Spooner 1886-1963, who started his long New York City career of 53 years in the hospitality business at the Waldorf in 1906, From the very start, he was associated with catering to notable personalities and celebrities, e.g "Diamond Jim Brady". By the time he started working at The Stork Club in the early 1930s, his reputaion as Broadway's most celebrated waiter was secure and from there it just grew further, because of the incredible VIP clientele, that gathered nightly and asked for Spooner's table in the Stork's "Cub Room" at 3 East 53rd St, His tenure at the Stork (the place that gave birth to the Cafe Society )spanned nearly three decades,
Our dining room itself, holds many mementos of his career on its walls and shelves, and I still get a buzz from feeling his presence watching over our table. Over the first decade of Spoonercentral.com being online, I have occasionally added in pages that spotlighted Grandpa Jack's life. As I enter the second decade, I realize time has come to have a central location, to host all the links from the past pages and more to come.
